Diane Keaton, renowned for her stellar acting skills and impeccable fashion sense, is a name that will forever be etched in Hollywood history.
Her iconic roles in films like Annie Hall and The First Wives Club are as memorable as her unique androgynous style, characterized by tailored suits, turtlenecks, and an array of accessories, including her signature hats.
Effortlessly chic and sophisticated, Diane once quipped that to emulate her style, one needed ‘a turtleneck, suit, large belt, and of course, a hat and glasses’. However, the motivation behind her distinctive style has a poignant backstory.
It wasn’t just about making a fashion statement for the star. In a 2015 interview with the Los Angeles Times, she revealed that her battles with skin cancer prompted her to take sun protection more seriously in her 40s, which led to her wearing hats.
The actress was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma at 21 and later with squamous cell cancer.
Headwear formed part of her approach to shield her face from harmful sun rays. Likewise, her preference for high-necked garments ensured her neck remained covered.
But there was more to it than that. Diane also utilized her distinctive fashion choices as a form of personal armor.
“Yes, it’s very protective. It hides a multitude of sins,” she revealed to InStyle in 2019. “Flaws, anxiety – things like that. I would not feel comfortable in a short skirt or something cut off with my arms hanging out there.”
She went on to explain: “And I’ve always liked hats. They just frame a head. But, of course, nobody really thinks they’re as great as I do.”
The beloved Hollywood legend tragically passed away last week at 79 years old. “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness,” her representative announced.
Close companions revealed to People magazine that Diane’s condition had “declined very suddenly” during her final months. Her loved ones “chose to keep things very private” and even some of her longtime friends “weren’t fully aware of what was happening,” one friend shared with the publication.
Diane achieved stardom in the 1970s through her performance in The Godfather series and her professional and personal partnership with filmmaker Woody Allen. She earned an Academy Award for Best Actress for 1977’s Annie Hall.
Her extensive career featured films such as The First Wives Club, numerous partnerships with director Nancy Meyers and the Book Club series. She leaves behind her two sons, Dexter, 29, and Duke, 25.
