Diane Keaton Questioned Her ‘Godfather’ Casting For Decades

It’s hard to imagine anyone but Diane Keaton playing the role of Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather films.

Keaton would reprise the role in subsequent films, but it was her role in the first Godfather film (1972) that shot her to fame. For decades, Keaton somehow never understood why or how she landed the role.

The opportunity to ask that question arose in June 2023, when The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola took to his Instagram Story and hosted an “Ask me anything” session.

Keaton didn’t waste the opportunity.

The actress jumped into the session and bluntly asked, “Why on Earth did you choose me for The Godfather?!!”

The famed director responded, via The Hollywood Reporter’s story in 2023, “I chose you, because although you were to play the more straight/vanilla wife, there was something more about you, deeper, funnier, and very interesting. (I was right).”

Kay Adams-Corleone played Michael Corleone’s (Al Pacino) second wife. Michael was a World War II hero who attended his sister Connie’s (Talia Rose Shier) wedding with Kay, whom he introduced to the rest of his family at the wedding reception.

But instead of marrying Kay, Michael meets —  and later marries — Apollonia after meeting her while hiding out in Sicily following Michael’s execution of Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo and corrupt police captain Mark McCluskey to avenge the attempted assassination of his father, Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando). Apollonia died in a car bombing that was intended to kill Michael.

Michael eventually returns to the States and catches up with Kay, who never understood why Michael disappeared out of the blue. They rekindle their relationship, get married, and have two children.

Keaton reprises her role as Kay Adams-Corleone in 1974’s The Godfather: Part II and 1990’s The Godfather: Part III.

Coppola Also Said …

According to THR, Coppola said he saw Keaton’s Broadway performance in Hair before offering her the role in The Godfather.

“I was invited by Fred Astaire to accompany him to see Hair,” he said. “Which he couldn’t make ‘hide nor hair’ out of. You were in it, and I remember your beautiful singing voice.”

Keaton Hadn’t Read the Script

The beloved actress, who died on Oct. 11 in California, told People in 2022 during her Hand & Footprint Ceremony at TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood that she actually never read the script before landing the role.

“I think the kindest thing that someone’s ever done for me … is that I got cast to be in The Godfather and I didn’t even read it. I didn’t know a single thing,” she told the outlet. “I just was going around auditioning. I think that was amazing for me. And then I had to kind of read the book.”

She added, “I think about how lucky I am. That’s what I think. And the way I think about things, like I auditioned for The Godfather, not having ever read The Godfather or caring about The Godfather or anything, because all I was doing was auditioning. I needed to get work. So I was there and so he had me come back and then he cast me and then Al Pacino.”
