Did the chairs turn?
That’s really the only thing that matters when you are a singer on The Voice – a popular TV show on NBC.
So as Battle Creek’s Jack Austin took The Voice stage for the blind auditions, and started to sing, all eyes were on the four chairs in that studio to see if they would turn and invite him to stay on the show.
Turns out Austin saw three chairs turn and now the former Lakeview High School graduate will get to continue his dream to be the next ‘Voice’ champion.
Austin appeared on the network television show on Monday, Sept. 22. The Battle Creek singer gave a smooth rendition of ‘This Town’ to the approval of coaches Reba McEntire, Michael Buble and Niall Horan.
The next step was selecting a coach, which turned out to be pretty easy as his song was originally sung by Horan. Prior to Austin picking Horan as his coach, the two took the stage and sang a chorus of ‘This Town.’
Each coach works with a handful of singers as they battle each other in the coming weeks to stay on the show.
Austin, 22, is a student at Western Michigan University.
Austin is an independent music performer and songwriter. He has been nominated for several Josie Music Awards. The Josie Music Awards is described as the “largest, most respected, revered award show” for the independent music industry. In 2024, Austin received the award for ‘Rock Song of the Year.’ Austin won ‘Rock Song of the Year’ for his song “Get Away.” He was presented his award at the Josie Music Awards at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
He was nominated for three awards total as an individual in 2024, including ‘Pop Vocalist of the Year’, ‘Rising Star of the Year’, as well as ‘Rock Song of the Year’. His Battle Creek-based theatre company Unity Theatre Company was also nominated for ‘Music Business of the Year.’
He founded the Unity Theatre Company, in partnership with Kellogg Community College, where he coaches kids to learn a full-length Broadway production in a matter of weeks.
Austin has also been productive as an actor. He played one of the key roles in “Legally Blonde” at Western Michigan University. He has performed at the Augusta Barn Theatre. And he was part of the musical “Boy on the Billboard” in a production in Texas.
Making him a good choice to be on “The Voice,” in 2022, Austin was also selected to perform in New York City as part of an event called “20 & Under Sing 20 & Over” at the notable club Feinstein’s/54 Below. The event features four rising stars under 20 years old singing duets with Broadway musical stars who are over 20.
