We’re now nearly two decades into the resurgence of vinyl as a music format, with the IFPI recently hailing a 19th consecutive year of growth for record sales in 2025. But recent years have also seen a sustained comeback – admittedly from a very small base – for the cassette format too.
One report last year suggested that US cassette sales would reach 600k units in 2025 as a whole, while official stats in the UK revealed 53% growth to 164k units that year. Now Discogs is getting in on the action with a limited-edition ‘Cassette Player with Blank Tape’.
It’s a partnership with We Are Rewind, and it’s very limited: only 150 units are being sold. The device supports Bluetooth audio for headphones and speakers (“plus, there’s a 3.5mm jack for the purists”) and promises up to 12 hours of playback on a single charge.
Discogs is also working with Rough Trade to curate a series of new album releases on cassette, taking in artists including The Howlers, Lauren Doss and NYX.
“In a world of endless notifications and algorithmic feeds, this is your invitation to slow down, and press play on your favorite music,” is the pitch to buyers.
