Even Time Lords aren’t immune to corporate shake ups. In the wake of the BBC and Disney+’s seemingly controversial era of Doctor Who, the sci-fi mainstay has hit another snag. While there’s still no Season 3 renewal just yet, it has been announced that the major partnership that shaped Ncuti Gatwa’s era as The Doctor is no more. In the wake of that news, there’s a bit of good and bad news to consider, along with a really big question that needs answers.
Doctor Who Will Return…In 2026
The break up was revealed, via a statement issued by BBC director of drama Lindsay Salt. Along with words of gratitude, and acknowledging that a full streaming spinoff is still forthcoming, Ms. Salt also revealed these plans for Doctor Who’s return:
“We’d like to thank Disney+ for being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons, and for the upcoming ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea.’ The BBC remains fully committed to ‘Doctor Who,’ which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026.”
Apologies to anyone who was hoping for answers on Billie Piper’s spontaneous regeneration sooner than later. The good news is that there’s more time to debunk the theory of whether or not Rose Tyler’s return is a bi-generation meant to give one of David Tennant’s Doctor clones a permanent companion. However, this is where those questions I mentioned before come into play.
The One Huge Question Fans Should Be Asking About NuWho
I know you’re all probably motivated to ask the question, “What is happening with Doctor Who?!” Even after learning that there’s a Christmas special on the way for 2026, the fate of the series still feels up in the air without a Season 3 renewal. However, the BBC confirmed its continued commitment to The Doctor, thanks to this further comment from Lindsay Salt:
“We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”
Having said all of that, my big question is where will international audiences eventually be expected to watch Doctor Who? Now that the Disney+ partnership has ended, have a feeling that won’t be where we should expect the 2026 Christmas special to stream. With that entity currently handling distribution outside of the UK, what’s going to happen once Disney is totally out?
That concern extends to the recent past as well, thanks to the NuWho era between Christopher Eccleston and Jodie Whittaker’s arcs still not being available for streaming. Could this current Doctor Who run, and its spinoff, find a similar fate?
It wouldn’t be surprising to see Disney+ removing the series, much as it has with previous titles like the short-lived Willow TV series. For now, you can still watch the entirety of Disney and the BBC’s Doctor Who partnership, through Disney+ in international markets.
