This week’s new music Friday also features Rod Wave, Lil Tony Official and Kareen Lomax.
It’s the first Friday of the New Year! Everybody’s got a brand new set of resolutions to break and a lot of people are still enjoying time off before things get back to business next week. So there aren’t a lot of new releases, but quality over quantity, amirite?
Some big news is the long-awaited return of Jill Scott. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter drops her new single “Beautiful People,” and announces To Whom This May Concern — her first album in a decade — is coming in February. And the project features Ab-Soul, J.I.D., Tierra Whack and Too $hort.
As for this week, we’ve got Doechii teaming up with SZA to address the haters, and Chief Keef gets creepy. Meanwhile, YFN Lucci’s latest single offers a heartfelt start to the new year.
Each week, Okayplayer will deliver a roundup of all the latest new heat from some of our favorite artists. Check out the latest offerings in our playlist below:
NEW SONGS
DOECHII W/SZA – “GIRL, GET UP”
Doechii addresses her haters with a little help from SZA on this surprise single. She takes aim at all that “industry plant” chatter in the first heater of the new year.
CHIEF KEEF – “HARRY POTTER”
The Chicago vet drops this experimental but oddly infectious slice of psychedelic drill. He gets down over some truly eerie production.
YFN LUCCI – “NUN2SUM.”
Over a guitar-driven beat, Lucci embraces moving forward. Including words from his kids makes the track even more heartfelt — as he raps about perseverance.
JILL SCOTT – “BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE”
It’s been a decade since we got a new album from Jilly From Philly. Well, the drought is almost over and the first hint at what’s coming is this gorgeous single.
KAREEN LOMAX – “IDEA OF YOU”
Loving the idea of someone rather than who they actually are is common and the singer-songwriter out of ATL perfectly captures the highs and lows of infatuation.
ROD WAVE – “FEED THE STREETS”
Rugged and melancholy but carried by Wave’s tuneful melodicism, it’s the kind of single that he does effortlessly. An ode to isolation.
LANCEY FOUX – “EAGLE EYE”
A dark but powerful statement of self-worth that masterfully uses the King of Pop, giving a speech about Black artists being taken advantage of.
REDVEIL – “STUPID PRIZES”
After dropping his Sankofa project and closing 2025 on a high, he’s opening the new year with this brand new single. A killer ode to the genius of J Dilla.
NEW ALBUMS
LIL TONY OFFICIAL – ‘MRS. KEY’
The Atlanta rapper has made his spiritual journey a key part of his music, and his new album highlights his struggles between the spirit and the flesh in a way that always feels relatable.
