Dolly Parton made a rare public appearance on Wednesday, June 24, stepping out to officially open her new Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop in Cornersville, Tennessee, months after ongoing health issues forced her to cancel a highly anticipated Las Vegas residency.
The New York Times was on hand as hundreds of fans packed the travel center long before Parton arrived, with many unsure whether she’d be able to attend at all. When Tennessean Travel Stop owner Gregory H. Sachs teased the crowd by asking, “Who would like to see Dolly Parton?” the answer came moments later as Parton walked onstage to loud cheers.
The appearance lasted only a few minutes, but it was enough to reassure many in attendance. Wearing a fringed blue outfit and sparkling heels, Parton joked about her newest business venture before cutting the ribbon with oversized pink scissors. “I’m sure some of you wondered why I wanted a truck stop—well, I couldn’t leave it to beavers,” she said, drawing laughter with a playful nod to Buc-ee’s famous mascot.
The new attraction expands Parton’s growing portfolio of Tennessee businesses. Along with fuel pumps and convenience store staples, the destination features exclusive Dolly-themed merchandise, “Cup of Ambition” coffee, a dog park, a live performance space and a tour bus display where visitors can take photos.
It’s also the latest addition to a business empire that continues to grow alongside plans for her upcoming SongTeller Hotel and Life of Many Colors Museum in downtown Nashville.
For many fans, though, the biggest attraction wasn’t the truck stop—it was seeing Parton herself. “We’ve been worried about her,” said Tobie Adair, who joined many attendees wearing butterflies and pink in tribute to the singer’s signature style. Amy Key echoed that sentiment, saying, “I don’t know if we’re going to recover if we were to lose her. There’s no one that can replace her.”
Those concerns have been building for months. Last year, Parton postponed her six-show Las Vegas residency after revealing she needed medical procedures for what she described as “health challenges.” The concerts were rescheduled before ultimately being canceled as she continued treatment.
More recently, she told fans she had been “responding really well to meds and treatments,” explaining that lingering health problems had left her immune and digestive systems “all out of whack.” She also said she still wasn’t physically ready for the demands of performing, joking that she couldn’t be “dizzy carrying around banjos, guitars and such on 5-inch heels.”
The ceremony itself lasted only about five minutes, but for the crowd that waited hours just to catch a glimpse of her, it was more than enough. As local resident Nona Brock put it after the ribbon-cutting, “It’s kind of exciting when you get to lay eyes on her. It was wonderful.”
