Country music star Dolly Parton doesn’t often take issue with others, but after one interview left her feeling ‘hurt and humiliated’, she almost sued.
The 9-to-5 singer was outraged by radio host and personality Howard Stern after he pieced together an offensive sound bite using quotes from an audiobook she had recorded.
The clips were combined to make an audio clip that appeared both racist and sexually explicit, which was then aired to his listeners. The Dolly clip, broadcast in 2008, offended her so badly that she released a statement that indicated she was planning legal action against the former America’s Got Talent judge. It comes after Stern claimed to know the real reason that Donald Trump ran for president in a major new theory.
According to Billboard, Dolly said at the time, “If there was ever going to be a lawsuit, it’s going to be over this.” She added, “I have never been so shocked, hurt, and humiliated in all my life.”
Dolly also made it clear to fans that the clips were not in context, clarifying that Stern had “done editing or some sort of trickery.” She said, “In a blue million years, I would never have such vulgar things come out of my mouth.”
Earlier this week, Stern took to his SiriusXM channel to make a “special announcement,” following the shocking news of his show’s alleged cancellation. Stern, who is on his regularly scheduled summer vacation from June to September, posted about the pause of his break on the show’s official Instagram page just before he went live to make the statements.
The radio show also added in the caption that the announcement would be made alongside Lars Ulrich for Metallica.
Post-announcement, fans have begged Stern to address the cancellation rumors. On the same day, the U.S. Sun reported in another August 6 article that Stern’s iconic SiriusXM radio show, which has had a 20+ year run, would be “canceled.”
A source told the publication, “Stern’s contract is up in the fall, and while Sirius is planning to make him an offer, they don’t intend for him to take it.”
They continued, “Sirius and Stern are never going to meet on the money he is going to want. It’s no longer worth the investment,”
They also added that fans should expect Sirius to potentially make a deal to earn rights to his expansive library.
“But as far as him coming back to doing the show, there’s no way they can keep paying his salary,” the source said firmly. “After you saw what happened with Stephen Colbert, it’s like they just can’t afford to keep him going.”
