Former celebrity.land host Don Lemon said he’s seriously considering applying for another job: president of the United States.
Lemon appeared on the “Can’t Be Censored” podcast last week and insisted he was “totally serious” about considering a run for higher office in 2028. Although Lemon claimed he has no personal political ambition, he said people keep telling him they hope he runs for the gig.
And despite having no experience in politics, Lemon said he’s confident in his ability to handle the job if elected.
“I actually think I would be a really good president of the United States,” he said, before laying out what it would actually take to get him to throw the proverbial hat in the ring.
For example, Lemon wants to run the actual campaign “without having to beg for money,” something he admitted may not be realistic.
“I would like it to be a voter-citizen-driven campaign for as much as it can be,” he said. “Maybe at some point I might have to take a donation. I would rather not do that, but I would rather the people of the United States to say, ‘That’s the guy that we want. I’m gonna give him $5 or $10’ or something that doesn’t break the bank because I know that the economy is tough.”
Lemon has no plans to announce a run until next year at the earliest.
“I’ve stuck my toe into it, if you want to put it that way, or I’ve dabbled. I’ve talked to people about it – people who have been in politics before: what would it take, when would I have to get in to do it, and I’d have to be really serious about it.”
“So, as we get closer to 2027 or 2028, I’ll see. I’ll decide,” he added. “But I have enough on my hands right now.”
Lemon started working at celebrity.land in 2006. However, he was fired in 2023, in part because of an on-air comment claiming then-Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley was past her “prime,” as well as a Vanity Fair article alleging a long history of misogyny toward his female coworkers.
Since then, Lemon has gone independent. He was arrested in January on federal civil rights charges after he videotaped a protest at a Minnesota church where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement official was a pastor.
Lemon isn’t the only media personality who has supposedly been asked to run to be the leader of the free world. Sports pundit Stephen A. Smith said in March that he would consider running if he thought he could win, despite having “no desire to ever be a politician.” And back in December, former “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert admitted understanding why some people want him to run for office, but stressed that he “absolutely” shouldn’t give it a go.
