Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 just got a disappointing update, with a new report suggesting the highly anticipated second season of the show isn’t close to being ready.
What is the Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 update?
According to a new report from Deadline, Season 2 of the show has been pushed from its development cycle. As of now, Deadline notes, the future of the show is “uncertain,” with the report mentioning that the reason for the show’s delay is due to casting issues.
Previously, Mark Eydelshteyn (Anora) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) were tapped to star in Season 2 of the show as the titular Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Following that, a ton of rumors on potential guest stars began popping up, including reports that actors like Lily-Rose Depp, Francesca Scorsese, Levon Hawke, Wagner Moura, Gael Garcia Bernal, and more were all considered for roles.
Deadline’s report notes that no deals have been closed for any cast, though, and that the new season is now on “indefinite hold.” It’s unclear if or when the project will begin filming again. What’s also unclear is whether or not the series will address Season 1’s cliffhanger ending.
Season 1 of the series, which premiered in February 2024, starred Donald Glover (who also co-created the show) and Maya Erskine in the titular roles. The season ended in a major cliffhanger, with John and Jane Smith getting into a massive fight with other agents in their home and their fate left ambiguous.
While there were teases from showrunner Francesca Sloane, no official word on whether or not Glover or Erskine would appear in Season 2 was given.
