American President Donald Trump frequently makes headlines for controversial remarks and unpredictable choices – but now Channel 4 believes they understand exactly why he is so “out there”.
The third episode of the broadcaster’s documentary series, The Donald Trump Show, was broadcast on Wednesday evening. The narrator presented a theory behind the 79-year-old politician’s sometimes questionable behavior.
The program chronicles the US president’s second term in office, re-editing archived news footage as dramatic storytelling to recount his narrative. It comes weeks after the commander-in-chief addressed swirling rumors about his health.
While displaying footage of the US leader dancing and shaking his posterior before a massive audience, the voiceover proposed that Trump was “a narcissist who thinks he’s a genius” and “doesn’t know too much about foreign policy and just makes it up as he goes along.”
They continued, “The reason he has gotten so far is because he knows politics plays out on TV.”
The show featured clips of some of Trump’s most significant moments, including his intense conversation with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other public appearances, offering another theory about Trump’s conduct.
As it highlighted that the President sought to acquire Gaza and Canada, the narrator questioned: “So what is going on?” It then proposed, “Well, it could all be a strategy.
“The old madman theory of foreign policy, used by Henry Kissinger for President Richard Nixon.”
The show then transitioned to a clip of Nixon being questioned about the theory, with a reporter stating, “Unless you negotiate in a serious way then Nixon is just erratic and might do something dangerous,” drawing parallels between Nixon and Trump.

The show’s narrator went on to say, “Their idea was to act crazy, to terrify their enemies and make themselves impossible to predict.”
A video clip was then shown featuring Donald Trump standing on a rooftop as reporters can be heard yelling, “Mr President, what are you doing up there?” He gestured wildly before responding, “There’s nuclear missiles to be launched off the roof!”.
The concept of the madman theory suggests that the appearance of irrationality makes otherwise non-credible threats seem credible. Trump embodies this theory as the most predictable aspect about him is his unpredictability.
He frequently changes his mind, contradicts himself, and displays inconsistency – leaving everyone in suspense about his next move.
