Tom McGreevy fronts Toronto jangle pop combo Ducks Ltd., and now he’s launching his own label as well. Bleak Enterprise officially launches today with Portland, OR’s Bory, who just released the single “We’ll Burn That Bridge When We Get to It,” with an album announcement to follow in January.
Bleak Enterprise’s name is a nod to Get Bleak, Ducks Ltd.’s debut EP from 2019.
“My only real goal for Bleak Enterprise is to try to help out some people who make music that I like,” McGreevy told Exclaim! in a statement about the new label. “Especially with all the touring we’ve been doing over the last few years I hear so many artists that I get excited about, and have become more acutely aware that there are always way more people making interesting and worthwhile music than there are people with the knowledge and resources to help them build an audience. Through being in a band I’ve also learned a bunch about how to do all the various band things, and I’ve met a bunch of people who understand the parts of the music industry that I don’t know as much about. Many of them are very kind people who are extremely generous with their time and knowledge!”
He added, “My hope is that the label can help to connect some artists I love with some of the opportunities we’ve been fortunate to have been afforded, and if it all works like it’s supposed to, get some more people listening to the really good records they’ve made.”
McGreevy explained that hearing Bory’s music gave him the nudge he needed to launch the label. He said, “I’ve been a big Bory fan since his last LP, and while I’d been vaguely thinking about doing the label thing for a while, Brenden sending me his new music was what inspired me to actually do it. He strikes a fine balance between gentleness and bombast, elevating his earnest, soft-spoken songs with a sophisticated approach to arrangement and a willingness to get weird. His music is fun, surprising, clever, and communicates from a place of emotional clarity. Really does all of the things that you want guitar pop to do!”
