Former Dancing With the Stars pro Cheryl Burke thinks Andy Richter could make it to the season 34 finale.
Richter’s Dancing With the Stars journey has been one of the season’s most surprising for most viewers and even Richter alike. The comedian, 58, has managed to stay in the competition, defying the odds and even his own expectations. But Burke, 41, isn’t surprised.
“This is nothing new to the show,” she told Variety. “This has been happening. Welcome! I’m not surprised at all.”
The two-time Mirrorball Champion added:”This guy could easily make the finals.”
The former Conan O’Brien sidekick has a heartwarming demeanor that creates a compelling story each week he remains in the competition. His dancing doesn’t what’s most appealing with the audience (and even the judges) each week.
“He’s staying authentic to who he is,” Burke said of Richter’s tenure in the competition. “And I think there’s no secret there. Emma [Slater] is a great partner.”
Burke isn’t sure Richter would have made it this far in the competition without Slater, 36. “That’s a credit to the casting director and the showrunners,” Burke said. “They know the pros. The intention is always to try and support people. No one’s setting anyone up for failure.”
After his Wicked Night jazz performance, Richter earned three 7s from the judges — solid scores that reflect real improvement. Of course, there’s still room to grow. Next week, he and Slater will perform a paso doble to “Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op.67: I. Allegro con brio” by Ludwig van Beethoven for Halloween Night.
Fans can’t get enough of Richter’s genuine approach (the Hosier yell moment!). He is staying true to himself while leaning into the humor of the situation — he can’t believe he’s still in the competition either, as evidenced by his reactions when he’s safe each week. It’s that heart that fans love. No one wants him to reinvent himself as a polished ballroom dancer.
As viewers cheer him on each week, Richter’s run on Dancing With the Stars isn’t just about perfect scores. It’s about joy, growth, and connection. And for many fans, that’s exactly what the show is all about.
