Charles, Earl Spencer has announced that he privately got married for the fourth time in Arizona on Friday. Prince William and Prince Harry’s uncle married Professor Cat Jarman and married in an intimate ceremony in with Sedona’s Cathedral Rock as a backdrop.
In a joint statement they say: “We both feel so incredibly lucky to have progressed from being colleagues, to friendship, to deep love and connection. Each stage of our relationship has been underpinned by laughter and we share a passion for life.”
The couple, who first started dating two years ago, first met after the Earl was asked to review Dr Jarman’s 2021 book, River Kings, on the Vikings. The couple have collaborated on a number of archaeological digs and co-host the history podcast The Rabbit Hole Detectives alongside Reverend Richard Coles.
Dr Jarman will become styled as the new Countess of Spencer.
The news of their wedding comes after Dr Jarman settled a legal claim against the Earl’s ex-wife, Karen, Countess Spencer, Cat sued her partner’s ex-wife in 2024 over allegations of misuse of private information.
Dr Jarman said she is “delighted to be able to move on with my life” after settling a High Court claim against his ex-wife. Dr Jarman sued the former Countess Spencer in 2024 over allegations that she misused the archaeologist’s private information by disclosing details of her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) to others.
While Earl Spencer and Karen, Countess Spencer announced their separation in June 2024, the Earl was previously accused of “dumping” his ex-wife of 13 years by text message, court papers reportedly alleged.
They read: “Having given up her life in the United States, in order to live in the middle of rural Northamptonshire and dedicate herself to sorting out the Althorp Estate business, as well having a child, the news was hideous for Lady Spencer.”
Earl Spencer told the newspaper: “The notion that I would end my marriage by text is an absurd attempt to blacken my name. Karen ended the marriage, after endless threats to do so over the years, in early March.”
