Noah Hawley recently explained a key character’s shocking death in Alien: Earth Episode 6 and how it sets up the larger role of a pivotal entity.
In the episode, Isaac ignores Curly’s warning and enters the Fly’s enclosure, where Eye Midge uses its sheep form to push him into danger. Hawley broke down the scene in a recent interview.

Hawley hinted that the Eye Midge may wield greater influence in the series. In Episode 6, Isaac (Kit Young) makes choices that lead him into the Fly’s pen, and Hawley emphasized that the Eye Midge leverages the moment.
“I liked the idea that it’s watching, it understands cause and effect. Ultimately, Isaac is killed because the sheep saw an opportunity and took it,” Hawley said. He added, “You begin to realize, oh, this thing isn’t just like ‘animal smart.’ This thing is maybe a consciousness that has the potential to really take over. (via Decider)
Isaac’s death unfolds after he lies to Curly (Erana James) and chooses to feed the mysterious alien alone. While handling the Fly’s feeding drawer, he breaks it. He then opens the enclosure himself, believing his hybrid body is immune to danger. The Eye Midge, in its sheep form, seizes the opportunity. It butts the glass and startles Isaac into the Fly’s cell.
“I sat down and I wrote what is probably the most disturbing scene that people will see on television this year,” Hawley said. “This idea that the sheep, who are not known for their intellect, was a sort of mastermind was kind of irresistible to me,” he further stated.
Inside the pen, the Fly emerges and attacks Isaac, exposing hybrids as vulnerable to natural predators. “There has to be a threat level. You can’t have these hybrids be actually immortal,” Hawley noted. “There has to be some natural predator for them among these creatures.”
Hawley further explained his reasoning for including five alien species aboard the USCSS Maginot. “Alien is so much about the gruesome discovery process of the life cycle of these creatures… if you haven’t seen one of these creatures eat or reproduce yet, we still have things to show you,” he concluded.
