The Reading Royals have announced that they’ve acquired defenseman Ethan Szmagaj from the Savannah Ghost Pirates in exchange for future considerations. Szmagaj, 24, made his professional debut last season, putting up an assist in four games with the Ghost Pirates. The Royals also received forward Massimo Rizzo, who was assigned to the Royals by the Philadelphia Flyers.
Prior to going pro, the Canton, Michigan, native spent four years in the NCAA with Arizona State University. In 130 games with the Sun Devils, he put up six goals and 22 assists for 28 points. He would spend his junior career in the USHL with the Waterloo Black Hawks. During his time with the Black Hawks, he had nine goals and 50 assists for 59 points in 160 games. Szmagaj also saw action in four games during the 2019 USHL playoffs.
Massimo Rizzo Assigned to Reading
Rizzo, 24, joins the Royals after spending last season in the AHL with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. In 46 games with the Phantoms, he had six goals and 12 assists for 18 points. Prior to joining the Phantoms, the seventh-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes spent three seasons in the NCAA at the University of Denver. In 107 games with the Pioneers, he would put up 39 goals and 87 assists for 126 points, and he wore a letter in his final season with the Pioneers. During his first year with the University of Denver, Rizzo put up 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points in 39 games and was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team. The Pioneers also captured a National Championship in Rizzo’s rookie year.
