Ed Sheeran shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon following the release of his new album “Play” and recently announced ‘Loop’ stadium tour. However, the English songwriter is always thinking about the future, which includes his death and final contribution to the musical world.
During a Sept. 10 interview with Zane Lowe, the “Shape of You” singer shared more details about his album “Eject,” which Sheeran plans to release posthumously after he dies. He explains that it will feature 10 songs he’s written throughout his life and his wife, Cherry Seaborn, will decide which songs make the cut.
“It’s actually in my will, and Cherry gets to pick the tracks for it. It’s fully in there if I was to go tomorrow,” he told Lowe.
He explained that “Eject” will feature songs he’s written “from the age of 18 to when I pass away — just choose the 10 best.”
He compared the project to a hypothetical scenario involving Paul McCartney. “It’s like imagine if Paul McCartney dies and there’s early 16-year-old Beatles recordings and then right up to it, the 10 best of his entire career,” he told Lowe.
Sheeran acknowledged that “Eject” might not be everyone’s cup of tea, “but there’ll be lots of my fans that would find that super interesting.”
Although the 34-year-old artist doesn’t appear to be close to his death, he seemingly just wants a plan in place. “You know how posthumous albums come out, but they’re sort of unplanned. I want to sort of make a plan,” he explained to Lowe, adding, “because you never know.”
Sheeran is indeed a meticulous planner. In March 2025, he revealed during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that he’s had a ten-part album plan in the works for years.
“When I was like 18, I had an idea for like 10 albums. It’s ”Plus,” “Multiply,” “Divide,” “Subtract,” “Equals,” and then “Play,” “Pause,” “Fast Forward,” “Rewind,” and “Stop,” he told Fallon.
He credited director Quentin Tarantino, who famously planned to direct only ten films, for the idea. Sheeran also noted that he may release side projects “every now and then,” similar to Tarantino’s “Grindhouse.”
Given Sheeran’s projected timeline, he still has at least four albums to come (“Pause,” “Fast Forward,” “Rewind,” and “Stop”), not including any side projects he may work on. “Eject” is intended to be his final album.
