In 1464, Elizabeth Woodville, the widowed daughter of Sir Richard Woodville and Jacquetta of Luxembourg, sought to secure the inheritance of her two sons after the death of her first husband, Sir John Grey. Tradition holds that she waited beneath an oak tree near her family’s estate at Grafton Regis to petition King Edward IV directly. The young king was struck by her presence and, despite her Lancastrian connections and lack of a substantial dowry, chose to marry her in secret. Their union, conducted privately in May 1464, surprised and angered many of Edward’s advisors, who had expected him to marry a foreign princess to strengthen alliances.
The marriage was revealed the following year, and on 26 May 1465 Elizabeth was crowned Queen Consort at Westminster Abbey. The coronation was a grand ceremony that formally acknowledged her new status, though it also deepened resentment among the nobility. Elizabeth’s family, the Woodvilles, quickly rose in influence, securing advantageous marriages and positions at court. Her elevation marked a turning point in the Wars of the Roses, as her children and kin became central figures in the conflict. Elizabeth’s daughter, also named Elizabeth, would later marry Henry VII, uniting the houses of York and Lancaster and founding the Tudor dynasty.
