Reese Witherspoon’s Legally Blonde icon Elle Woods was a bubbly fish out of water at Harvard Law School. Now, the first teaser for the Prime Video show about her teenage days plops her in a new setting — one that also has no idea how to handle this pink-loving ray of sunshine.
The new series, Elle, is set in 1995, years before Elle would join Harvard Law. Newcomer Lexi Minetree stars as the titular Southern California-born-and-bred character. Unfortunately, teen Elle’s life gets turned upside down when her father announces the family is moving to Seattle, where grunge reigns supreme and the only blondes at her new school have intentionally dark roots. (The horror!) Fortunately, Elle’s beloved chihuahua Bruiser is here for support.
Check out the teaser below:
The new show wascreated by Insecure writer and producer Laura Kittrell, and is showrun by her and Batwoman’s Caroline Dries. Witherspoon is also executive producing.
In a statement in May 2024, Witherspoon said of the project, “I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series! Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?! Legally Blonde is back!”
What to know about the new Elle
Producers cast a wide net in hopes of finding the perfect person to play a younger version of Witherspoon’s character, and they found her in Witherspoon doppelgänger Lexi Minetree. The actress, who appeared in shows like Law and Order: SVU and TV movies like The Murdaugh Murders, was revealed as the new Elle in February 2025. At the time, Witherspoon shared a video of Minetree getting the role over video call — and bursting into tears when she was told of the good news.
“I think I will go method for this role and just believe in myself and say, ‘You know what? I’m bringing Lexi’s take onto this role and following in the footsteps of what Reese has already created,’” Minetree told People in 2025 of her approach to the role. “She’s such an amazing character, and I’m just putting my own little sprinkles of magic on it, for sure.”

Will there be a Season 2?
Yep! A second season of the series was announced earlier this year.
“Elle captures the heart, confidence, and optimism that made Elle Woods an enduring cultural icon, while giving audiences a fresh and deeply personal coming-of-age story,” said Peter Friedlander, head of global TV at Amazon MGM Studios. “Ordering a second season speaks to our belief in the creative vision and the incredible team behind the series, and we’re excited for audiences to experience Elle’s journey starting with Season One.”
Will James van der Beek still be in the series?
Sadly, the Dawson’s Creek alum died in February following a colorectal cancer diagnosis, after being announced as a member of the Elle cast. He filmed his part in the show as Dean Wilson, a mayoral candidate and Elle’s school district superintendent, prior to his death. It will be his final TV performance.
“The greatest thing about work is cancer doesn’t exist between action and cut,” he said in an interview with Today in December 2025. “It was fun to drop in and just have a blast because it’s such a great cast, a great production, and everybody out there is really talented.”
Who else is in the cast?
In addition to Minetree as Elle, June Diane Raphael stars as Eva, Elle’s mom. Tom Everett Scott will play Wyatt, Elle’s dad. Other cast members include:
Gabrielle Policano as Liz
Chandler Kinney as Kimberly
Jessica Belkin as Madison
Chloe Wepper as Ms. Burke
Kayla Maisonet as Tiffany
In addition, Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan will appear in Elle. However, you’ll have to wait to see her: She’s set to portray a character named Sam in the second season.
Sam, the founder and editor in chief of the school’s newspaper, is described as the “grammar police” and “enemy of joy.” While she possesses Elle’s ambition, she’s lacking the character’s “optimism.” Whether these two become friends or rivals, we’ll have to see!
When will ‘Elle’ premiere?
Get ready for a perfect day: Elle is heading to Prime Video on July 1.
