The host of this year’s Emmy Awards has vowed to donate $100,000 to charity – if winners keep their speeches short.
The American comedian, Nate Bargatze, who is said to be worth more than £56m, will host the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night.
Bargatze, 46, made the pledge to donate $100,000 (£73,000) to a US volunteering charity, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, after the prestigious television awards, if the ceremony’s winners do not waffle when collecting their trophy.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live this week, the comedian said that the amount would diminish every time a star went over the 45 seconds allocated for thank you speeches.
He said: “Everybody gets 45 seconds to do all the thank yous. So what I came up with is I’m going to donate $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Club… that’s what the show’s starting at.
“When everybody uses their 45 seconds, if someone goes over, we take away $1,000 a second every time they go over.”
Speaking of cutting actors and actresses off mid-acceptance speech if they go over the time limit, he added: “I know people work hard for the Emmys and stuff so I feel bad.”

Celebrities have long used the stage at the Emmys, which is a three-hour show known as the “TV Oscars” and is held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, and other award ceremonies to give convoluted thank you speeches or as a platform for political posturing.
The American science fiction psychological thriller series, Severance, leads the nominees this year, with 27 nominations, followed by The Studio, starring Seth Rogan, which has 23 nominations.
Owen Cooper, the 15-year-old star of Netflix show, Adolescence, has been nominated for an Emmy
Among the British nominees are Owen Cooper, the 15-year-old star of Netflix show, Adolescence, about a teenage boy accused of murder. Cooper has made Emmys history by becoming one of the youngest ever to be nominated.
The show’s leading actor, Stephen Graham, who plays Cooper’s father, is also up for best actor. The show became the second-most watched series ever on Netflix, after Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, following its release in March.
Cooper, who was 14 when the show was filmed, has attended the Hollywood parties with his mother, Noreen, a carer, and his father, Andy, who works in IT, ahead of the awards ceremony.
The teenager, from Warrington, said: “I will never forget this for the rest of my life. If I break the record that would be cool. It’s all next level. This time last year I didn’t know what I’d be doing.
“Never could I have believed that this show would change my life in the way that it has.”
