Wind ensemble

The Cal Poly Humboldt Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre presents the Cal Poly Humboldt Wind Ensemble Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Fulkerson Recital Hall on campus in Arcata.

Tickets are $15 general, $5 for children, and free for Cal Poly Humboldt students with ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at tickets.humboldt.edu/dance-music-and-theatre.

The program follows:

“Overture to Colas Breugnon” by Dimitri Kabalevsky. This overture was written as the curtain raiser of Kabalevsky’s opera based on Romain Rolland’s lusty novel of life in Burgundy, France, during the 16th century.

“The Philosopher’s Stone” by Thomas Duffy. This composition sings the praises of the South Shore Conservatory on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, 1970-1995. The title refers to the medieval Philosopher’s Stone, an imaginary substance sought for by alchemists in the belief that it would transform base metals into silver or gold.

“Roma” by Valerie Coleman. “Roma” is a tribute to the Romani culture in five descriptive themes. The melodies and rhythms are a fusion of styles and cultures: malagueña of Spain, Argentine tango, Arabic music, Turkish folk songs, 3/2 Latin claves and jazz.

“Konigsmarsch” by Richard Strauss. This march was premiered in 1907 for a palace concert in Berlin, with Strauss conducting. During this concert, King Wilhelm II granted Strauss a citizenship award, and the piece is dedicated to the king. The work incorporates the Romantic forces of rich scoring, rigorous flourishes and a bold sense of harmonic power as well as a lyrical trio for winds and horns and an unusual hymn section for brass.

“In Living Color” by Katahj Copley. This is an ode to live music and the return to the wind band stage after COVID-19.

“Vigils Keep” by Julie Giroux. This is an original celebration of Southern life and tradition. The melody of “Wayfaring Stranger” spiritually weaves through “Vigils Keep.” All the rest of the notes are inspired by stories, family, the Southern way of life and its music.

Theater fundraiser

Ferndale Repertory Theatre will hold “REPFEST 2026,” the theater’s annual fundraiser and gala, Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Ferndale Community Center, 100 Berding St.

This event brings together supporters, artists and community members for an evening of connection, entertainment and impact. Guests are encouraged to dress up and enjoy a festive evening out.

The evening begins with a no-host bar, silent auction and hors d’oeuvres. Featured bites include crostini with salmon cream cheese and dill, vegetarian stuffed mushrooms with a blend of ricotta, parmesan and gorgonzola, and bacon-wrapped prawns with tamari, honey and ginger.

Guests will then enjoy a full buffet dinner catered by Lost Coast Catering, featuring house breads, mixed greens with fruit and honey-dijon vinaigrette, roasted potatoes and green beans, jasmine rice and a choice of chimichurri chicken or balsamic-marinated salmon, with a sesame-ginger tofu option available upon request. Dessert will be an espresso chocolate mousse topped with vanilla whipped cream.

The evening continues with live entertainment featuring members of the cast of “The Music Man,” opening in late May at Ferndale Repertory Theatre.

The evening also includes a live auction with exclusive experiences and packages. Highlighted offerings include a custom murder mystery experience for up to 16 guests, a private movie night at the theater for up to 150 guests, curated travel packages, catered dinners and more.

Proceeds from REPFEST directly support Ferndale Repertory Theatre’s productions, youth education programs and community partnerships, including initiatives that provide access to theater for local students and families.

Tickets are $100 and are available at www.ferndalerep.org or by calling the box office at 707-786-5483. Tables of eight are also available. This event requires advance purchase, and tickets will not be sold at the door. Early reservations are encouraged, as this event often sells out.

‘Renegade Revue’

EXIT Theatre’s DIVA Burlesque will present “Renegade Revue: Animal Jam – A Drag & Burlesque Show” May 9 at 8 p.m. at the EXIT Theatre, 890 G St., second floor, in Arcata on the Plaza.

Tickets are $20, available at https://animal-jam-burlesque.eventbrite.com, or via cash at the door. (Leave reservations at [email protected].)

Rutabaga Ball

The 2026 Rutabaga Ball is set for May 16 at 7 p.m. at the Eureka Theater, 612 F St.

Contestants will show off their talents, charm, and complete lack of shame to win your heart and the crown, in a night of over-the-top performances, questionable pageantry and “all out glory.”

The new queen will reign over the Kinetic Grand Championship, Humboldt County’s famous three-day race of all-terrain, human-powered works of art.

In addition to the queen competition, the ball will feature tunes from DJs Blancatron and Green Beans, a full bar and food available for purchase from Fusion Bites food truck. This year’s theme is “Viva la Glory!”

Though former Rutabaga Queens choose the next queen, the audience will also have an opportunity to vote for “fan favorite.”

The Rutabaga Ball is an all-ages affair. Tickets are $20, with free admission for kids under 12. All sales go directly to the Kinetic Universe, the nonprofit that produces the Kinetic Grand Championship. Tickets are available at rutabagaqueen.com.

The Kinetic Grand Championship takes place over Memorial Day weekend. For more information, go to https://kineticgrandchampionship.com.
