Tammi Menéndez is celebrating 27 years with husband Erik Menéndez while he remains behind bars.
“Happy 27th Anniversary to my favorite person! ❤️ 27 years later, you still make me laugh and make life more fun every day,” Tammi wrote via X on Friday, June 12. “Here’s to exciting times ahead—because the best is yet to come! 🥂✨.”
Erik, 55, is in jail alongside brother Lyle Menéndez for the murder of their parents, José and Kitty Menéndez. José and Kitty were found dead in 1989. The following year, Erik and Lyle, now 58, were arrested on two counts of first-degree murder.
After two trials, Erik and Lyle were convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, the brothers have maintained that their mother and father were physically, emotionally and sexually abusive and they acted in self-defense.
While behind bars, Erik connected with Tammi via letters. They met in-person for the first time in 1997 and wed two years later.
“We did get very close through letters and then you know the relationship moved forward when I did meet him,” Tammi said in a 2005 interview with MSNBC. “But it was the correspondence that he became a really good friend of mine and understood what I was going through and I understood what he was going through.”
In 2024, Erik and Lyle’s case got public attention after their story was depicted in Ryan Murphy’s Monsters series. Nicholas Alexander Chavez played Lyle, while Erik was portrayed by Cooper Koch. The Netflix show, which earned critical acclaim, chronicled Lyle and Erik’s lives before, during and after the murders of their parents.
While the show aired, Erik and Lyle received support from viewers — including Kim Kardashian. The reality star, who is an advocate for prison reform, visited the pair in prison and published a personal essay for NBC News supporting their release.
In May 2025, Erik and Lyle were resentenced to 50 years to life, giving them the possibility of being released after going through the parole board. However, Erik’s request for parole was denied by the California Board of Parole Hearings two months later.
After Erik’s parole request was rejected, Tammi took to social media to react to the news.
“Parole Commissioner Robert Barton had his mind made up to deny Erik parole from the start,” she wrote via X at the time. “This was a complete setup, and Erik never stood a chance! #Injustice.”
