The organisers of a Jewish music festival are suing Showtime Events Group over a dispute concerning security at an event in Melbourne last year.
The one-night only concert, titled ‘Songs of Strength’, was due to be held at Melbourne Town Hall in September last year.
But the SHIR Australian Jewish Music Festival claims it was forced to switch venues at the last minute after Showtime denied its request to use Community Security Group (CSG), which specialises in Jewish security issues.
According to court documents obtained by the Herald Sun, the council approved CSG for security as long as certain criteria were met. But the organisers claim Showtime blocked their request to use CSG in favour of another security firm, Black Tie.
The organisers say they were forced to secure the smaller Athenaeum Theatre after Showtime cancelled the booking only days before the concert. Nonetheless, the sold-out event went ahead with CSG used as security.
The organisers claim the cancellation resulted in over $120,000 in costs, including reputational damage, and are seeking $100,000.
