Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights is one of the most talked about love stories of the year — and it’s all thanks to the vibe.
The loose adaptation of Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel stars Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, whose years-long yearning for Margot Robbie’s Cathy dooms them both. The sexy and salacious trailer features plenty of heavy breathing and smoldering looks, as well as something called a “skin room.” And while certain casting choices and historically inaccurate costumes have drawn criticism from some fans of the novel, Wuthering Heights is perfect for those desperately seeking a moody, tragic, dark love story..
With Wuthering Heights hitting theaters Feb. 13, the movie may inspire you to watch some other films that set this sort of vibe. Whether you’re longing for something that takes you back to a different time period or just places you inside the brain of someone experiencing obsessive love, these are perfect to watch.
Great Expectations (1998)
There have been many adaptations of Charles Dickens’s 1861 novel, but this one puts a modern, ‘90s-grunge tinge on the love story. It stars Ethan Hawke as a young man named Finn who attempts to break into the New York art scene, all while pining for his aloof childhood crush Stella (Gwyneth Paltrow). There’s even a steamy Titanic-esque portrait moment.
