Fans of both the television series Fallout and the video games from which it took its inspiration are all hyped up after learning of Fallout 76’s latest update, which is said to be the biggest one to date for the latest installation of the decades-old franchise.
As announced by Bethesda earlier today, Oct. 1, actor Walton Goggins, who stars as The Ghoul on the Amazon Prime Video series, is slated to make his virtual wasteland debut later this year, when the Burning Springs map expansion comes to Appalachia.
Creative Director Jon Rush says the impending update, scheduled for early December, is “poised to be one of [the game’s] biggest updates ever,” calling the new location, which expands the story and the lore into Ohio for the first time, “terrifyingly beautiful.”
Players will also get two “exciting” new public events, a new camp pet, and more — with Goggins’ The Ghoul serving as the local bounty hunter, offering new tasks and rewards for players.

Fans Are Undeniably ‘Hype’ Over The Ghoul’s Inclusion in ‘Fallout 76’
Players and viewers alike agreed that “This is HUGE for Fallout fans 🤩,” with several gushing, “OMG I cannot wait!!”
“Let’s Gooo!!!!!!! So excited for this update!!!!” one exclaimed, while another declared, “This will be awesome!”
“OK…this was NOT on my bingo card! 👀,” someone else admitted. “Bravo! 👏.”
The praise continued, with one calling the news “Sweet,” another replying, “OMGG HYPEEEE,” and someone else agreeing that it all “sounds rad as hell.”
“That’s actually quite cool,” one reiterated.
“Will he be romanceable? Asking for myself,” another quipped, while a final fan asserted that “More Ghoul = happy fans.”
“Keep it going,” they added.
Any Timeline Concerns Are All for Nought
Some were concerned that Goggins’ character’s inclusion may interfere with the game’s canon, as in the television series, which takes place in the year 2296, The Ghoul is on the West Coast, with clues pointing to Season 2 taking place in Las Vegas.
Fallout 76, on the other hand, takes place in Appalachia—primarily in West Virginia. However, as it takes place in 2102, and as a ghoul (a human significantly altered by radiation exposure) he doesn’t age, meaning that’s all covered, and fans can excitedly sit tight for more of his backstory.
Fallout first debuted on PC in 1997 as a post-nuclear role-playing game, with a sequel coming out shortly after in 1998. In 2008, Fallout 3 was released for home gaming consoles, with Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76 serving as the following major installations. Despite the impending update for 76, fans are eagerly awaiting any news on a potential Fallout 5.
Meanwhile, Fallout Season 2 is scheduled to hit the streamer on Wednesday, Dec. 17, with new episodes dropping weekly. Goggins returns as The Ghoul, alongside co-stars Ella Purnell and Aaron Moten, with Macaulay Culkin joining the cast.
