A sequel 20 years in the making is on the way.
Thomas Bezucha, the writer and director of The Family Stone, is working on a follow-up to the 2005 holiday hit.
Bezucha told celebrity.land he began writing the sequel before the recent death of the film’s star, Diane Keaton. The new film is intended to honor Keaton’s character, Sybil Stone.
“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” Bezucha said. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”
He added that Keaton’s passing has motivated him to “do a good job by the rest of the cast” and “honor her even more.”
No additional details about the sequel have been released.
The original movie follows Meredith Morton, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, as she visits her boyfriend Everett Stone’s quirky, bohemian family for Christmas. Chaos ensues, underscored by the matriarch’s terminal illness. Keaton portrayed Sybil Stone, the family’s matriarch.
Other stars in the 2005 film include Dermot Mulroney, Rachel McAdams, Elizabeth Reaser and Craig T. Nelson.
The Family Stone was a box office success, grossing about $92 million worldwide against an estimated $18 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
Keaton died in October at age 79.
