Family Tree (2000) is a performance artwork by Zhang Huan in which three calligraphers wrote Chinese characters across the artist’s face over several hours.
The text referenced ancestry, culture, and personal identity, gradually layering until it became unreadable and his face appeared almost completely black.
The work is widely interpreted as an exploration of how inherited history can both shape and obscure identity.
