On Monday, September 22, the ladies of The View tackled the topic of the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Fans had been quite vocal about the fact that the show did not bring up the Jimmy Kimmel situation at all during the two shows that aired after Kimmel’s suspension.

In addressing it now, all of The View co-hosts had strong responses to share. Whoopi Goldberg explained that there were two reasons the topic wasn’t broached earlier. First, she noted, Friday’s episode was pre-taped. In addition, she added, they wanted to “take a breath” and see if Kimmel himself commented on the situation before they got into it.

The reaction from The View fans was fairly mixed online. Many people were pleased that Kimmel’s situation was addressed and thought the women handled it well.

One Instagram comment read, “So happy to watch the View today and see that you have not been silenced. Keep u the good work!”

“I love these ladies. They’re not scared of putting themselves out there and speaking their truths,” one fan wrote on Instagram.

Another Instagram user gushed, “THESE ARE MY GIRLS!”

“Thank you all for keeping it real. I am a fan,” someone else wrote.

An additional response on Instagram read, “Been waiting for this!!!!! Thank you!!!!”

One fan admitted, “I WAS TERRIBLY DISAPPOINTED FOR YOUR SILENCE! Glad you are speaking up now! BRAVI, nice job ladies.”

However, there were quite a few critical comments posted on The View’s Instagram page and in Reddit, too.

“I think you all bowed to the pressure of all of us turning your show off for good and for not speaking about it so you thankfully changed your course this week. Do not patronize us or insult our intelligence,” one critic wrote.

Someone else commented, “A graceful cover story. Don’t believe that for a second, but glad you heard the outrage and reversed course. Good to hear you today united for free speech!!”

A Reddit user wrote in The View subreddit, “They chose not to speak initially there was no coming back from that. It’s not fixable. They already showed their true nature. You can’t put that toothpaste back in the tube.”

A common criticism was that viewers were disappointed it took “a week” for The View to discuss the Kimmel situation.

As celebrity.land noted, on September 15, Kimmel shared commentary on Charlie Kirk’s death on his show. On September 17, Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr suggested to pundit Benny Johnson that perhaps the FCC should push Disney to punish Kimmel by taking away ABC licenses.

Within hours of Carr’s comments, ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! was “pre-empted indefinitely.”

Sunny Hostin brought up a quote she learned in law school that she thought was appropriate in this situation. It was in a written opinion by Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., and read, in part, “We must protect the freedom to express the thought we hate.”

Ana Navarro shared, “I want to start by thanking our loyal viewers for demanding truth and courage from us. You deserve it, and we will give it to you.”

She also said, “I don’t understand how in this country, where the first amendment made to the Constitution was to guarantee freedom of the press and freedom of speech, the government itself is using its weight and power to bully and scare people into silence.”

Navarro added, “A bully always comes back for more. So they need to stand up, and we need to demand the same from ourselves.”
