Back in 1975, fans met Valerie as Barbara Romano on One Day at a Time. Throughout the show’s nine-season run, Valerie, Mackenzie Phillips (who played Barbara’s sister Julie), Bonnie Franklin (who portrayed Julie and Barbara’s mother, Ann), and many others showed the trials and tribulations of being a family in the 1970s. Viewers loved the series, and One Day at a Time later received a reboot on Netflix, albeit with a different cast and time frame.
To celebrate One Day at a Time, which first premiered on TV 50 years ago, Valerie posted photos from her time with the cast, past and present. What’s more, she reflected on what the time frame has meant to her as she marks an emotional moment in her career.
“One Day at a Time premiered on December 16, 1975,” she wrote on Instagram on December 16. “I don’t know how, but 50 years went by in a flash. My first major acting job was with these beautiful people and I will forever be grateful. 🥹.”
As fans read Valerie’s reflections on the 50th anniversary of One Day at a Time, they had to share how important the show was in their lives, too.
“Grew up watching this. Such great memories! ❤️,” one person wrote in the comments. “Loved it! Watched it from the beginning ❤️,” another penned. “50 years!!!??? 😱 I watched every episode!” a different follower added.
As some may know, this isn’t the only time Valerie has opened up about One Day at a Time reaching 50 years on TV. Back in February, she shared how the show impacted her life … even before she went on to star in it.
“I remember being 15, standing at the apartment door, and really thinking, at 15 years old, ‘This is gonna change my life,’ she shared on The Drew Barrymore Show in February 2025, per Entertainment Weekly. “Wow, I can still smell the smells. I can still see the audience. It’s like there’s certain moments — I mean, 15 is a long time ago from 50 years — so it’s hard to remember a lot of stuff that’s not that recent, but there’s certain memories from One Day at a Time that I still take with me. And that’s one of them.”
