“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” star Mia Sara is opening up about her unsavory experience filming the teen comedy 40 years after the movie ignited the 1980s pop culture scene.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Sara, who starred as Ferris Bueller’s girlfriend, Sloane Peterson, revealed that despite the 1986 film’s popularity, she didn’t have the best time making the beloved flick.
“I don’t really give interviews because making ‘Ferris Bueller’ was not that good an experience for me,” she told the outlet on Saturday. “But I’m very aware of what a precious thing this movie is, and I don’t want to disappoint people. But I didn’t get along well with [director] John [Hughes].”
Claiming to the Times that “John was a strange guy,” she detailed why she thinks the director, who died in 2009 at the age of 59, was “frustrated” with her when they worked together.
“He wanted us all to hang out together and to introduce us to the French New Wave films. But the others were seasoned actors, and I was a snotty New York kid and had seen all those movies, so he was frustrated in that desire.”
Sara went on to admit that she believes she didn’t have the “emotional maturity to deal with other people’s egos, or my own” at the time.
Sara, now 59, was cast in the film at 17, while her co-stars Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Grey and Alan Ruck were cast at 23, 25 and 29, respectively.
Elsewhere in the interview, Sara told the outlet that while there are some things in her acting career that she’s “really proud” of, she ultimately feels it was “not a happy career for me.”
Sara’s remarks about her experience on set came after she revealed to People last year that she hadn’t seen the film in years and that doesn’t stay connected to her former cast members aside from the virtual reunion they all had in 2020.
