“Fight for ’84″ is based on the real story of the 1984 United States Olympic boxing team.

The Netflix film, which Foxx is producing, is currently casting local background actors (see details below).

The movie tells the story of how the boxing program was rebuilt after 14 boxers and eight staff members from the U.S. amateur boxing team were killed in a 1980 plane crash while traveling from New York to competitions in Poland.

Four years later, the new Olympic team won 11 medals — nine of them gold — at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, setting a new record.

(That year, Cuba and the Soviet Union had boycotted the Olympics after the U.S. boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.)

Of course, Foxx is no stranger to the ring.

The actor, who won an Oscar in 2005 for his performance as Ray Charles in “Ray,” played Muhammad Ali’s trainer, Drew Bundini Brown, opposite Will Smith in Michael Mann’s “Ali” (2001). And he played boxing trainer Hassan El Ruk’n in Reginald Hudlin’s “The Great White Hype” (1996).

Foxx is also set to star as Mike Tyson in the upcoming series “Tyson,” originally planned as a biopic.

“Fight for ’84″ is being helmed by director Andrés Baiz (“Narcos,” “Griselda”). The movie is penned by Oscar-nominated screenwriters Andrea Berloff (“Straight Outta Compton”) and John Gatins (“Flight”) and Andy Weiss (“White Boy Rick”).

Malachi Beasley, who appears in “A House of Dynamite,” the upcoming Kathryn Bigelow Netflix thriller filmed in New Jersey, joins Foxx in the cast.

The boxing movie is one of several Netflix titles filming in New Jersey this fall.

Others include the Jennifer Lopez movie “The Last Mrs. Parrish,” the Cameron Diaz movie “Bad Day” and the Dan Levy series “Big Mistakes,” which is already in production in Jersey.

Foxx stars alongside Diaz in the Netflix action comedy “Back in Action,” released in January.

Netflix movies filmed in New Jersey this summer include “Little Brother,” with John Cena and Eric André; “72 Hours” with Kevin Hart; “Roommates” with Sadie Sandler (daughter of Adam Sandler) and Chloe East; “Don’t Say Good Luck” with Sunny Sandler; and “Good Sex,” a Lena Dunham-helmed rom-com with Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo, Meg Ryan, Rashida Jones and Tucker Pillsbury (the singer Role Model).

Local ‘Fight for ’84’ casting

Roman Candle Casting is seeking “fit, muscular men” to play boxers in the 1984-set movie.

The related scenes are set to be filmed Oct. 7 through 23 in New Jersey and New York.
