CBS will reduce episode counts for upcoming installments of several returning shows, including Fire Country Season 5. The network has opted for shorter seasons across multiple dramas as it prepares to expand its slate. This shift allows CBS to accommodate new scripted shows.

CBS cuts down Fire Country and other shows’ season length

CBS has reduced episode orders across several of its scripted series for the 2026–27 season, with Fire Country seeing a notable reduction. The firefighter drama has been renewed for Season 5, comprising 13 episodes. This is down from the 20-episode format it has largely maintained since its debut. The shorter run means the series will not occupy its usual slot for the full season.

The change comes even as CBS keeps its Friday schedule intact. Network entertainment president Amy Reisenbach had emphasized, “The CBS Friday night entertainment lineup has been No. 1 for an incredible 16 straight seasons, so we’re sticking with what works, Sheriff Country at 8, Fire Country at 9, and Boston Blue at 10 (via Deadline).”

Other series have also been assigned shorter seasons. NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Sydney will each produce 10 episodes and share the Tuesday 10 p.m. slot over the course of the season. Meanwhile, Matlock has been ordered for 13 episodes and is scheduled to return in midseason.

The revised episode orders reflect a broader shift in CBS’s programming strategy as the network expands its slate. New series, including Cupertino, Einstein, and NCIS: New York, are being added, alongside the comedy Eternally Yours. Several of these projects are expected to run full seasons.

Despite the reduction, Fire Country continues to hold a significant position within the lineup. The series was a major success upon launch. It has since supported the development of related shows within the same universe. The upcoming season will also mark a creative transition, with Eric Guggenheim taking over as showrunner from Tia Napolitano.
