The film, to be released Oct. 16, is based on the 2017 book by Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, who was implicated in Smith’s 2007 death at the age of 39.

Best known for her critically acclaimed role in 2009’s Bright Star, Cornish appeared more recently in Prime Video political-thriller series Jack Ryan.
Trust Me, I’m a Doctor also stars Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) as the titular physician, whose life is upended after his star patient was found dead in a Hollywood, Fla., hotel room on Feb. 8, 2007.
Kapoor had prescribed methadone to Smith, who was pregnant at the time, under a false name, per the Los Angeles Times. Kapoor issued a statement that the drug is approved for use by pregnant patients and noting that the media scrutiny surrounding Smith’s death “underscores why public figures may choose to use pseudonyms in order to protect the privacy of their medical treatment,” the newspaper reported.
Kapoor released his memoir, titled Trust Me, I’m a Doctor: My Life Before, During and AfterAnna Nicole Smith, in 2017.

Linda Hamilton (The Terminator) stars as Garofalo.
The film is written and directed by Thane Economou and produced by Ryan Hawkins, Al Engemann, Rebecca Case and Geenah Krisht. It opens in theaters Oct. 16.
