Florence + The Machine are reportedly set to release a brand-new single next week, after signalling their return with an online teaser.
The London band shared a brief, horror-themed video yesterday (August 11), showing frontwoman Florence Welch frantically digging up the ground in a windy, otherwise deserted field.
It came shortly after F+TM sparked speculation over their next era by sharing a cryptic series of images on social media last month.
According to SPIN, the group’s as-yet-untitled new single is due for release next Friday (August 20) via Republic.
Fans have also noticed that the official Florence + The Machine website has been revamped with a new logo above a countryside-set picture – continuing the theme of the recent teaser. Some have drawn parallels to Kate Bush‘s ‘Wuthering Heights’ video as well.
July’s update saw Welch at work in the recording studio with IDLES guitarist Mark Bowen, while a different photo included the word “October” – perhaps the month fans can expect a new album.
Bowen remixed Florence + The Machine’s ‘Dance Fever’ song ‘Heaven Is Here’ in 2022, with Welch calling IDLES “one of her favourite bands” at the time. She added: “I’ve been wanting to work on something together for a while.” The pair then co-produced F+TM’s cover of No Doubt’s ‘Just A Girl’ from Yellowjackets the following year.
Additionally, a separate new shot of Welch’s notebook included some possible themes for the sixth F+TM record, such as “witchcraft”, “folk horror”, “magic” and “insanity” – which reflect what fans saw on yesterday’s video.
Another photo displayed the phrase “You can have it all”, before listing the words “clarity”, “power”, “purpose”, “vocals”, “space”, “dynamics” and “beauty”. This particular image seemed to make a cryptic nod to Adele, too.
Glass Animals commented under last month’s carousel of photos. “omggggg,” the band wrote. Frontman Dave Bayley worked with Florence + The Machine as a producer on their latest album, ‘Dance Fever’ (2022), alongside Welch, Jack Antonoff, Kid Harpoon and Doveman.
During an interview at Mad Cool 2025 recently, NME asked Bayley whether he could shed any light on new F+TM material in the works.
“It’s not my place to say,” he coyly responded. “All I will say is: working with Florence is like one of the coolest things I’ve gotten to do. She’s a force of nature. What an amazing songwriter – I’ve learnt so much from her. I can’t say any more! Yeah, it’s very exciting.” Watch the video interview below.
This year has also seen Florence + The Machine celebrate the 10th anniversary of their 2015 third album, ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’. In 2024, Welch and co. played a one-off orchestral gig at London’s historic Royal Albert Hall to mark the 15th anniversary of their 2009 debut album, ‘Lungs’. The gig, put on as part of the BBC Proms, was captured on a live album titled ‘Symphony Of Lungs’.
Earlier this summer, Welch joined The Maccabees on stage at Glastonbury 2025 for their closing headline set on the Park Stage. She performed the band’s ‘Love You Better’ as well as her own hit single ‘Dog Days Are Over’.
Other work outside of The Machine of late includes Welch appearing on stage with Taylor Swift at Wembley Stadium last summer, with the pair playing their collaborative song ‘Florida!!!’.
She also made an appearance with Sampha on Everything Is Recorded’s single ‘Never Felt Better’ this year, and has written music for a new adaptation of The Great Gatsby on Broadway.
In a four-star review of ‘Dance Fever’ – Florence + The Machine’s fifth album – NME hailed the project as “the triumphant sound of a singer reborn”.
