Folk music legend Ted Egan has died.
He was 93. No cause of death was reported.
Egan reportedly died on Dec. 4.
“It is with sadness, but also great pride that Nerys Evans and the Egan family marks the passing of our beloved partner, Dad, grandfather, great grandfather and best mate Ed Egan, his family said in a statement according to themusicnetwork.com. “Ted passed peacefully at home this morning as was his wish. We shared Ted with Territorians, Australians and the wider world. He lived in a big and very generous life, spanning 93 years.”
The outlet called Egan “a legend among the Australian music scene.”
Egan’s long career began back in 1969, and he went on to release more than 30 albums. But that was not all that he achieved during his remarkable life. He authored 17 books, had a six-part TV series called “This Land Australia,” hosted “The Great Outdoors” show, and even got into public service working as the Administrator of the Northern Territory from 2003 through 2007.
ABC.net of Australia called him “a pioneer of Australian folks and country music,” who “wasn’t afraid to confront the hard truths of northern Australia’s history.”
“We will miss you Ted, long live the legacy of The Outback Song Man,” musician Matt Scullion wrote on social media.
Australia’s National Folk Festival issued a statement noting that “his influence continues to shape artists and audiences alike, and we honor his legacy with enormous gratitude.”
