Prince Harry has been accused of overshadowing King Charles’ high-profile state visit with Donald Trump.
The Duke of Sussex recently made headlines as he visited Ukraine, while also sparking chatter with his claims in an ITV interview about his remaining within the royal family.
PR and media expert Chad Teixeira suggested Harry’s actions are doing little to heal the “royal rift” between him and his family as his “foolish” TV interview is at risk of stealing the spotlight from his father, who recently met with Donald Trump.
“Planning a trip like the Ukraine one is very Harry, if I’m perfectly honest,” the expert told The Express. “The visit in itself is strong; no one’s questioning that. But the timing just muddies it.
“Dropping that interview and leaning into ‘I’m still part of the royal family’ right before King Charles heads off on such a big US state visit was always going to pull focus. Whether he meant to or not, it turns what should be a clear diplomatic moment into another round of the Harry vs the Palace narrative.”
The expert suggested Harry’s visit came across as him stealing the spotlight, “even if that wasn’t the plan.”
Harry traveled to Kyiv on April 23, which coincided with his nephew Prince Louis’ eighth birthday, delivering an extensive, passionate address at the Kyiv Security Forum. He emphasized he was “not here as a politician” but as “a soldier who understands service” and a “humanitarian.”
He also called on Trump to bring the war to an end, then spoke with ITV’s Royal Editor, Chris Ship, asserting, “I will always be part of the royal family. I am here working, doing the things that I was born to do.”
Commenting on this development, Teixeira noted, “The bigger issue here is that his relationship with the family is still rocky, and everyone knows it. That context doesn’t go away, and he isn’t doing anything to try and heal the ‘royal rift’ he has said he wants to reconcile.”
The expert suggested Harry’s comments will have “reopened everything” amid the royal feud. He sugested the problem comes amid an identity crisis for Harry, who is out of the royal family “but not fully out.”
Teixeira suggested Harry is at risk of “losing favor” from fans if he continues to adopt a half in/half out approach to the royal family. He said, “You can’t rewrite the rules every time you step into the spotlight, and that’s how it’s landing and it doesn’t look good for him.”
The expert concluded by saying Harry’s trip to Ukraine “lands like a distraction” and suggested his relationship with the royal family “still feels unresolved here.”
Teixeira warned, “Until he picks a lane and sticks to it, these moments will keep backfiring and he’s going to keep looking like he’s trying to pull the spotlight onto himself and trying to overshadow.”
