Everything but the Score: A World Cup guide for the soccer-curious, culture-obsessed and unexpectedly invested

The September Nintendo Direct closed things with a bang, featuring the announcement of a brand new Fire Emblem game called Fortune’s Weave, coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2. But there’s a very interesting twist at the end of the trailer.

Fortune’s Weave sports a new visual style for the series, although it seems very in-line with the visuals of Fire Emblem: Three Houses as well – and there might be a reason for that.

The trailer heavily focuses on a colosseum, with some kind of king or leader introducing the “games.” All of the battles we see in the footage also take place within this colosseum, suggesting the story might heavily focus on that aspect. It’d be an interesting twist for the Fire Emblem series, as Colosseums have long been a feature, as a way to train your units.

The main character seems to be named Cai, and in a battle we see them riding what seems to be some kind of bizarre giant chicken. We also see them running around the outside of the Colosseum.

But the big surprise comes at the very tail-end, after the title reveal. There we hear a voice say “Have you forgotten me so soon?” and then see an adult version of Three House’s Sothis. That creates some major questions surrounding this “new” entry in the sequel. Is Fortune’s Weave a sort of sequel to Three Houses, taking place far in the future of Fodlan. Or is Sothis some kind of interdimensional being that might start appearing in multiple Fire Emblem games.

At this point, we also don’t know who’s developing Fortune’s Weave. Presumably the studio behind the entire franchise, Intelligent Systems, will be on the game, and the visual style seems to suggest Koei Tecmo will be co-developing again. But we’ll have to wait for official confirmation from Nintendo.
