The UAB Department of Music presents recitals and concerts by students, faculty and guest artists each fall and spring semester.The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Music has announced performances this spring, including some special guest artists.

The Department of Music, in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences, presents recitals and concerts by students, faculty and guest artists each fall and spring semester. Many of the performances are free and open to the public and are held in the Hulsey Center for the Arts’ Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall and UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.

Tuesday, Feb. 24

UAB Wind Symphony and Symphony Band concert, 7 p.m., in UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. Directed by Sean Murray, Ph.D., and Cara Morantz, Ed.D. Free admission.

Tuesday, March 17

UAB Music senior recital: Caleb Gosnell, baritone, 7 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 901 13th St. South. Accompanied by Chris Steele, DMA, piano. Free admission.

Thursday, March 19

UAB Music senior recital: Anna Dunteman, horn, 7 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 901 13th St. South. Accompanied by Chris Steele, DMA, piano. Free admission.

UAB Piano Series presents Anthony Ratinov, piano, 4 p.m., in UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South. Born in Indiana, Steinway Artist Ratinov began his musical journey at the age of 4. His first teacher was his grandmother, Edit Ratinova, who taught at Moscow’s renowned Gnessin Music School for 45 years before emigrating to the United States. Ratinov graduated from The Juilliard School and Yale School of Music. Winner of the third prize at the 2024 Concours Musical International de Montréal and second prize at the National United States Chopin Competition, he earned acclaim at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Other honors include second prize at the Busoni International Piano Competition, first prize at the Ricard Viñes International Piano Competition, second prize and Audience Favorite at the València Iturbi International Piano Competition, and second prize at the Olga Kern International Piano Competition. Birmingham Chamber Percussion in concert, 7 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 901 13th St. South. An evening of chamber percussion ensemble works presented by percussionists Gene Fambrough, DMA, (UAB), Grant Dalton, DMA, (Samford), Mike Muncher, Garrett Gibson and Danny Moore, DMA. Free admission.

Sunday, March 29

UAB Music studio recital: Alissa Clevenger, mezzo soprano, 4 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 901 13th St. South. Accompanied by Chris Steele, DMA, piano. Free admission.

Monday, March 30 

UAB Department of Music presents the seventh annual PRISM concert, 7 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, Jemison Concert Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South. This annual showcase features UAB Music students and faculty in solo, chamber and large ensemble performances, ranging from classical, jazz and gospel to computer music and beyond. Tickets are $25; $20 for UAB faculty and staff; free for any students with ID. UAB Flute and Clarinet Choir concert, 7 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 901 13th St. South. Directed by Lisa Wienhold and Sarah Manasreh-Decker, DMA. Free admission.

Thursday, April 9 

UAB Music Honors Recital and Awards Convocation, 7 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 901 13th St. South. Performances by UAB Music students selected by outside adjudicators, with annual awards presentation for academic and musical excellence. Free admission.

Sunday, April 12 

UAB Piano Studio and Piano Ensemble concert, 4 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 901 13th St. South. Directed by Yakov Kasman, DMA, and Tatiana Kasman. Free admission.

Monday, April 13 

UAB Gospel Choir Spring Concert, 7 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, Sirote Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. South. Directed by Reginald Jackson, Ph.D. The UAB Gospel Choir Spring Concert will highlight the vibrant spirit and soulful expressions in gospel music and feature several local high school choirs. Tickets are $20; $15 for UAB faculty and staff; free to all students with ID. Buy tickets.

Tuesday, April 14

UAB Percussion Ensemble in concert, 7 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, Jemison Concert Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South. Directed by Gene Fambrough, DMA. The UAB Percussion Ensembles program performs a wide range of literature, from ragtime to contemporary, classical to rock, classics to premieres, and everything in between for this free concert. Selections can feature drums only, keyboard percussion only and virtually any combination, as well as any number of performers from quartets up to the large percussion orchestra. Free admission.
