SHEBOYGAN – John Michael Kohler Arts Center is hosting Wayside Days, a three-day event celebrating art, music and community, according to an announcement.
The event, set for Sept. 18-20 at the Art Preserve, aims to encourage attendees to embrace detours and side roads in life, echoing the words of Ruth DeYoung Kohler II, the center’s longtime director.
Music, tours and workshops planned
Wayside Days will kick off the evening of Sept. 18 with the final concert of the Levitt AMP Sheboygan Music Series. The Art Preserve grounds will open at 5:30 p.m., with singer Tiffany Xiong performing at 6 p.m. and Indigenous Indie Rock and Powwow band Bizhiki headlining at 7 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to take picnic blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy food and drinks from on-site food trucks and a beverage tent.
Sept. 19, guests can explore the inner workings of the Art Preserve during a special Behind-the-Scenes Collection Tour from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The guided tour offers a rare opportunity to view artworks typically stored in collection drawers and learn about preservation practices. Reservations are required. The Art Preserve will close at 6 p.m. following the tour.
Earlier that day, an Open Singing Circle workshop will take place at 4:30 p.m. The community workshop invites participants to learn and share traditional songs from a range of cultures, including Ojibwe powwow music, Hmong song poetry and Appalachian folk. The workshop will be facilitated by The Hinterlands, who will explore how oral traditions, language and storytelling are being revitalized and sustained today.
Community Day set for Sept. 20
The event will culminate with a Community Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 20.
Visitors of all ages can enjoy an afternoon filled with opportunities to connect with the land, art and one another.
The day will include guided walking tours of the Art Preserve grounds, informal discussions about invasive plant species and a hands-on Intentional Seed Bomb Making activity led by Native American educator Lucille Burr Grignon of Ancient Roots Homestead.
The afternoon will also feature hands-on artmaking, live music and refreshments.

Thursday, Sept. 18
- 5:30 p.m. — Art Preserve grounds open
- 6 p.m. — Presentation by singer Tiffany Xiong
