Led by vocalist and rhythm guitarist Jerry Linney, Southern Breeze has been performing together for approximately 18 years and focuses on preserving the sounds of country legends.
“We play traditional country music,” Linney said. “Trying to keep all the sounds of Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Alan Jackson alive.”
Linney says the band often adds a little extra energy to familiar songs while staying true to the classics.
The current lineup includes Linney on vocals and rhythm guitar, Artie Scruggs on lead guitar, Bob Moses on bass, and local drummer Dev Lambeth.
While this will be Southern Breeze’s first appearance at Waterfest, local audiences may recognize the group from performances at area events, including shows at the Elks Lodge and the former Slightly Off Broadway venue.
For fans of classic country music, Southern Breeze offers a chance to hear songs that helped define the genre while enjoying a summer evening downtown.
Local Talent Takes the Spotlight
Following Southern Breeze, the stage will belong to local performers during the Excelsior Springs Idol competition from 7 to 9 p.m.
The annual talent showcase gives singers and performers from across the area an opportunity to step into the spotlight and compete before a hometown crowd. For many attendees, it’s one of Waterfest’s most entertaining traditions, featuring a mix of experienced performers and first-time contestants.
The competition has become a favorite community event because it celebrates local talent and gives audiences a chance to cheer on friends, neighbors, classmates, and family members.
Saturday Night: Josh Collins Closes Out the Music Lineup
Wrapping up the weekend’s musical entertainment is the Josh Collins Band, performing from 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday on the Rite-Way Main Stage.
Based in the Kansas City area, the Josh Collins Band is led by singer-songwriter and U.S. Navy veteran Josh Collins. Originally from Adrian, Missouri, Collins began performing at age 15 and developed a sound rooted in traditional country music with a modern country-rock edge.
