From dreaming of the NBA to playing on it: Badshah’s full-circle moment
Indian rapper Badshah fulfilled a childhood dream by participating in the 2026 Ruffles NBA All-Star Celebrity Game in Inglewood, California. He teamed up with global stars, marking a significant moment for Indian hip-hop’s growing international presence on a major sports and entertainment platform.

Indian hip-hop found itself at the intersection of sport, culture and global pop spectacle this Valentine’s weekend as rapper-hitmaker Badshah made a star-studded appearance at the 2026 Ruffles® NBA All-Star Celebrity Game. Held on February 13 at the iconic Kia Forum in Inglewood, California, the high-octane matchup marked the Indian music icon’s debut on one of basketball’s most glamorous stages. And for the chart-topper, it was far more than just a game, it was the fulfilment of a childhood dream. ‘I walked straight onto the court… as a player’ Taking to Instagram after the game, an emotional Badshah reflected on the surreal experience of going from an NBA fan in India to playing on the court himself. “Having probably the most MAST time… Always wanted to see an NBA basketball court live at least once in my life. And when it finally happened… I didn’t even see the court, I walked straight onto it to PLAY! Not as a spectator. Not from the stands. As a player. The power of dreams of a kid… Too much to learn, too much inspiration. Thank you, God.” He also shared earlier that growing up in India, the NBA “felt like a dream world,” adding that stepping onto the court representing Indian hip-hop was “deeply personal.” Teaming up with global stars Badshah teamed up with actor Simu Liu and internet creator Cody Jones, taking on an opposing lineup led by comedian Keegan-Michael Key and several sporting greats and entertainers. The game brought together an eclectic mix of celebrities and athletes, including Olympic sprinter Andre De Grasse, NFL star Amon-Ra St. Brown, DJ Mustard and football legend Cafu, making it one of the most culturally diverse editions of the celebrity showcase. Badshah’s team was coached by Emmy-winning actor Anthony Anderson alongside elite NBA shooting coach Chris “Lethal Shooter” Matthews and renowned trainer Chris Brickley; a mentorship lineup that blended entertainment with serious basketball pedigree. A lifelong love for basketball Badshah, a known basketball enthusiast, has often spoken about his passion for the sport and its cultural influence on music and fashion. “Basketball has always been one of my biggest passions… It’s an honour to share the court with legends from the NBA, NFL, Hollywood and music,” he said in the lead-up to the event. He also noted how naturally the collaboration fit his artistic world: “The NBA sits at the intersection of sport, music, fashion and culture; that’s the same space I’ve always operated in.” Indian hip-hop goes global Badshah’s participation marked a milestone moment for India’s music. Widely regarded as one of the country’s most commercially successful rappers, with multiple chart-topping singles, the artist has steadily expanded his international footprint through tours, collaborations and crossover pop culture appearances. His NBA outing symbolised more than celebrity fandom; it spotlighted the global rise of Indian pop and hip-hop on one of sport’s most visible entertainment platforms. “Moments like these remind me why I started – to break boundaries and create new firsts. I’m carrying the energy of Indian hip-hop, Indian fans and Indian dreams with me,” he said. Pop culture meets courtside energy Bringing trademark swagger to the hardwood, Badshah blended athletic enthusiasm with his larger-than-life stage persona, interacting with fellow players, fans and global media across the All-Star Weekend festivities. From music arenas to basketball arenas, the crossover felt seamless; proof that Indian artists today are no longer just touring the world, but actively shaping global pop culture conversations. And as Badshah summed it up best; sometimes dreams don’t just come true… they tip off under stadium lights.
