Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has faced further humiliation as residents in York voice a request to remove a plaque dedicated to his visit 25 years ago. Andrew, whose reputation is in tatters over his connection to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, visited the Millennium Bridge in the city in May 2001.

The 66-year-old was arrested last month on suspicion of misconduct in public office following allegations he shared sensitive information with Epstein during his time as trade envoy. He was later released under investigation. Andrew has always denied any wrongdoing.

The plaque, which is facing plans to be changed, has led residents to request a removal rather than a change.

His name, along with the names of funders, trustees and designers, was inscribed on the plate attached to the structure.

As well as Andrew, the plaque shows his former Duke of York title – which the disgraced royal previously held from 1986 until last year.

Ahead of the calls from residents, council deputy leader Peter Kilbane said: “There is a planning process to follow where plaques are attached to listed buildings or structures whether it be to add, remove or alter, but we’re not aware of any heritage plaques linked to this individual”.

One local said, “Don’t waste money altering it,” whilst another said, “Rip it down and stick it in a skip.”

Like the residents, Cllr Darryl Smalley, who led the move to strip Andrew of the freedom of the city, said the plaque should be removed from Millennium Bridge.

He said: “Obviously it [the Millennium Bridge plaque] should be removed. We just need to expunge all record of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the city and we’ve done a pretty good job of that so far”.

Andrew reopened Inverness Town House in 2018, with a plaque fitted to mark the historic occasion. This plaque has now been removed, a move that was confirmed by The Highland Council last month.
