Despite being a favorite among critics and devoted fans, the FX workplace comedy “English Teacher” has been cancelled. The show will not be picked up for a third season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Creator Brian Jordan Alvarez stars in the show as Evan Marquez, a gay English teacher who works at a high school in Austin, Texas. Other featured cast members include: Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton and Carmen Christopher.
All 10 episodes of the show’s second season premiered in September, but despite receiving positive reviews, the show wasn’t renewed. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave the second season a 100% fresh rating, while the first season score was 98%. In its review of the second season, the AV Club said “the comedy has the chemistry, playbook, and legs for more potential seasons.”
Controversy preceded the second season as Jordan Alvarez was accused in August 2024 of sexual assault by a former co-star. Despite the accusations, FX greenlit the second season in February 2025.
FX has not publicly commented on the reasoning behind the cancellation.
