For those hoping to see more of Dave “Lil Dicky” Burd’s FX comedy series Dave, the news isn’t good. In an interview with Variety about his upcoming stand-up special, Dave co-star Andrew Santino explained that despite reports that the show was “on pause” when its third season wrapped in 2023, “that thing is gone.”
“I don’t even know why that narrative is out there, that’s not true. We’re not doing the show,” Santino continued. “I think people said it was on pause to protect the relationship of the show, but that’s all nonsense. The show is done. We are all going our own way and doing our own thing.”
Santino expressed no ill will towards the series, adding that “it was a great run, and we all enjoyed it very much. It ran its beautiful little course, and that was a wonderful moment in time. I’m happy I was a part of it, but in no world do I think the show would ever come back.”
The decision to end the series, Santino says, wasn’t one that involved him at all. “I was a hired gun. That was between Dave Burd, Jeff Schaffer and FX. I had no power over what was happening. I kind of found out when everybody else found out that it wasn’t coming back. But people saying, ‘Perhaps we’ll pause it and come back’… I know better. Dad left to get cigarettes. He’s not coming home.”
It would admittedly be hard for Dave to top its Season 3 finale, which not only featured appearances from Rachel McAdams and Drake, but brought in Brad Pitt for an extended appearance that descended into violent madness. Speaking to Consequence then, Burd said that “I put my all into this season and I’m so proud… I don’t think there’s a miss. All 10 episodes are so great. They’re their own independent short films, different genres throughout, and every episode one-ups the next one. I feel like we did it as well as it could be done this season.” And Burd wouldn’t be the first creator to quit while he’s ahead.
Dave is streaming now on Hulu, which also happens to be where Santino’s new comedy special, White Noise, premieres on Sept. 12th.
