Gavin Newsom is once again using his knowledge of Taylor Swift music as an advantage in his political conversations.
In his latest social media post directed at Donald Trump, the California governor employed one of the tracks from Swift’s brand-new album, The Life of a Showgirl, to help him send a message to the president—and it’s not even the first time he’s done so.
Gavin Newsom Takes Aim at Trump with the Help of a New Taylor Swift Track
In a new video shared to his Instagram page over the weekend, Newsom used the audio to Swift’s new track, “Actually Romantic,” which has only been out for a few days since The Life of a Showgirl‘s official drop on Friday, Oct. 3.
But Newsom, 57, wasted no time in using the song’s witty lyrics to his advantage, pairing the track with photos from some of his interactions with the president—including a few of their more tense conversations.

As part of the clip, Newsom also included screenshots of the president’s previous social media posts about him, in which Trump often refers to the governor as “Newscum.”
Across the montage, Newsom added lines from “Actually Romantic,” in which Swift sings, “It’s actually sweet/All the time you’ve spent on me/It’s actually wild all the effort you put in/It’s actually romantic/I really gotta hand it to you.”
Fans Say Gavin Newsom’s Social Media Team ‘Deserves a Raise’
By using the satire in Swift’s “Actually Romantic” lyrics, Newsom seems to be commenting on the criticism he receives from Trump, opting to instead look at it as attention, or even affection, like Swift does in the song.
“No one works harder than Gavin’s social media team,” one fan wrote in the comments on Instagram, while someone else said, “Hahahah whoever pitched this concept deserves a raise.”
“This is chef’s kiss,” another fan wrote.
And it’s not the first time Newsom has used Swift’s discography to address the president. He did something similar back in June, when he used the singer’s 2019 track “You Need to Calm Down” to address Trump’s angry social media posts directed at him.
In the song, Swift sings, “Say it in the street, that’s a knockout/But you say it in a tweet, that’s a cop-out,” which Newsom wrote in the June TikTok video, along with a caption referring to to Trump as “America’s keyboard warrior.”
What Is Taylor Swift’s New Song ‘Actually Romantic’ Really About? ‘
Despite Newsom’s interpretation of “Actually Romantic,” Swift herself explained the meaning behind the bouncy new track on The Life of a Showgirl: Track-by-Track Edition on Amazon Music.
“’Actually Romantic’ is a song about realizing that someone else has kind of had a one-sided adversarial relationship with you that you didn’t know about,” Swift, 35, explains. “And all of a sudden they start, like, doing too much, and they start letting you know that actually you’ve been living in their head rent-free, and you had no idea. And it’s presenting itself as them sort of resenting you or having a problem with you.”
“But, um, taking that and you just accepting it as love and you accepting it as attention and affection,” Swift continued, “and how flattering that somebody has made you such a big part of their reality when you didn’t even think about this. It’s actually pretty romantic, if you if you really, really think about it.”
