GB News was interrupted for a bombshell update about the BBC – and it’s not good news for the Royal Family. Martin Daubney shared details of the BBC’s plans to make huge cuts to the department that is responsible for its major royal events. BBC Studios Events Productions has covered the most important royal events over the years, from King Charles’ coronation to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
Former Arts Minister Sir Michael Ellis has claimed the BBC‘s decision is “anti-British”, criticising the corporation during a live appearance on GB News. He said: “It’s painful for the viewers. This is an anti-British decision by the BBC and it’s not the first one along these lines that they’ve made. They can make cuts from so many different wasteful departments that they have.
“They sent 550 people to the Glastonbury Festival to cover that. 550 people! And yet they think they need to cut eight people from the department that broadcasts the royal ceremonial events. It’s a political decision. It’s a lefty political decision that they’ve made.”
He accused the corporation of wanting to reduce coverage of “majestic broadcasts”, including Trooping the Colour, Remembrance Sunday events, as well as the late Queen’s funeral and the Jubilees.
He noted that the BBC’s reputation is already weakened in many areas and believes it risks damaging its standing even further by cutting coverage to save money.
Sir Michael continued: “This is something for which they are famous around the world and have been for generations. Their reputation is already shot in so many different areas, particularly in news coverage, but now they want to damage their reputation further by making these savings.
“What about making these savings amongst their executive branch? They have enough executives at the BBC to run a small country. In fact, we did run small countries with fewer officials in our foreign office and colonial office than they have now at the BBC and they can’t run an organisation.”
The former politician went on: “What concerns me is that viewers, like those on GB News, will miss out on coverage that they enjoy seeing. But they always have GB News to turn to for coverage of ceremonial events.”
Sir Michael responded: “This is about eight to ten people running this department, which is award-winning by the way. Only last week, they won a Royal Television Society Award for their coverage of Holocaust Memorial Day last year.”
He added that US President Donald Trump is known to enjoy events like this, yet that is the department the BBC is choosing to cut.
“How about sending a few hundred fewer people to Glastonbury? They’ve made a decision to ignore that part of their audience that enjoys these events and enjoys watching them,” he fumed.
Sir Michael noted that the decision came just before the appointment of the new Director General, suggesting it may have been rushed to avoid any objections from the incoming leader.
