GeeJay share their new track ‘Murder’

Soul-pop duo GeeJay craft songs with such an irresistible live feel that their music appeals right across the sonic spectrum. After releasing their debut album last year, the north Londoners have been picking up airplay in the right places with support spanning Radio 1 (Jack Saunders’ Future Artists), Radio 2 (Trevor Nelson’s Track of the Week and a premiere from DJ Spoony), Apple Music 1 (Matt Wilkinson), 1XTRA (Jamz Supernova), Robert Elms (BBC Radio London), playlist cover artist for Spotify’s Next Wave Soul and a Top 10 placement in Spotify’s Soul ‘n’ the City playlist. ‘Murder’ is a beguiling cocktail which spans multiple genres seemingly effortlessly. At the forefront of the mix is vocalist and songwriter Gina Jane’s blissful voice, which unites class, soul and summer beauty. Her bandmate, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jay Lobo, brings funk flair and jazzy flourishes which is then further infused with an instantaneous pop finesse. Lyrically ‘Murder’ is a plea for peace which reflects on how humanity seems unable to learn from its own history, remaining trapped in a perpetual cycle of violence.

Gina Jane and Jay Lobo met by chance in 2016. They were both supporting prior musical projects by working in the Music & Beans cafe in Haringey, a home-from-home for music-loving coffee connoisseurs that’s decorated with instruments and music-related artwork. Logically they should have never met, but an error on the rota meant that their usually opposing shifts were accidentally rescheduled together.

Their connection was cemented after the cafe closed for the day. The team would often gather in a practice room at the back of the cafe for beers and impromptu jams, and their first session together was even recorded by a friend. Before long, late nights of songwriting turned into 6am starts and during this time, they realised they had something special.

It wasn’t long until closed doors jam sessions resulted in music that made a connection in the wider world – most notably two independently released tracks, ‘Stronger’ and ‘Ordinary Girl’, which have exceeded 25 million streams between them. More praise ran through to the release of their debut album ‘What’s The Sun Without The Rain?’ which The Guardian tipped as “⁣⁣a charming debut, promising soulful joy for the future.” Their rise was also backed by Fearne Cotton, who included them on her ‘Happy Place’ compilation album, and Clash.

GeeJay’s live shows have been steadily growing in size ever since, with sold-out sets at The Jazz Cafe and The Lower Third. Next up is their biggest headliner to date at London’s Islington Assembly Hall, where they will be accompanied by a full live band. Tickets are available HERE.
