MARLBORO — From abstract to figurative, the hooked rugs by Beth McDermet surprise and delight. The rugs currently on view at the Marlboro Community Center through Feb. 28 present a burst of color, diverse imagery and a wide variety of compositions, according to a news release. McDermet challenges our preconceptions of what a hooked rug can be. All of the rugs in the exhibition are her designs. She starts with a drawing, transfers the design to linen and begins the hooking process.
A reception for the artist is planned for this Friday, Jan. 23, from 4 to 6 p.m.
One of McDermet’s rugs is titled: “Shape Shifting” and her note under the rug “In life, nothing stays the same.” In this exhibition, all of the rugs are extraordinary and each one is an individual statement by the artist, according to the release.
McDermet has notes next to every rug in the show. “Doing Cartwheels” looks like a totally abstract image. This rug is based on a photo from Hubble Telescope of the Cartwheel Galaxy.
One of the most unusual hooked rugs in the exhibition is “Stained Glass Treasures.” The idea that a rug made of wool could interpret the light coming through a stained glass window can be a daunting creative challenge. McDermet’s ability to convey the luminosity of this translucent material is pushing the boundaries of hook rug genre.
The Marlboro Community Center is open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.
