Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik are navigating their own system for coparenting, and this week, that included celebrating their daughter Khai’s fifth birthday.
Hadid commemorated the moment on Instagram, where she posted a slideshow of photos taken from the birthday girl’s party. “Celebrating you is the Best Day Ever, every year,” Hadid wrote in the caption. “Happy 5th Birthday to the light of my life! You are truly everything✨✨⚡️⚡️⚡️ so lucky & proud to be your mama!!!!!!! 🧁 (p.s. 5 HOW ?!?)🥹.”
The post gave Hadid’s followers a peek at the party, which was a relatively understated affair that seemed to take place in her backyard.
Large pieces of colored construction paper were cut out to create a sign that said, “Khai is five,” while other decorations were themed around the character Angel from the Lilo & Stitch franchise. Meanwhile, Khai’s cake featured tiers of rainbow frosting, with the words “Happy 5th Birthday Khai!” written on top.
While Hadid and her daughter were seen snuggling up together in a few of the photos, it turns out that Malik also took part in the festivities. It’s unclear whether he hosted a separate celebration, but his involvement was confirmed after a user commented: “I wish, her dad would also be there…” To which Hadid quickly responded, “She was with us both on her birthday!! 🩷.”
Last year, the parents each made loving posts on Khai’s 4th, with Malik sharing a rare photo of him and his daughter on the beach. “Happy birthday to the most important person in my life,” Malik wrote. “I love you more than words allow me to express, beyond proud to call you my daughter.. grateful for every second I get to spend next to you, as you become the incredible person I know you already are. Four years ago today my life changed forever and I wouldn’t be the man I am today without you.”
Meanwhile, Hadid shared her own post, which read: “Khai- it is my life’s greatest joy and pride to be your mama!!!! Thank you for the four best years of my life- you remind me to live life to the fullest every day, in the most simple & beautiful ways. Your possibilities are endless, my sweetest love !!!! 🦄🪱🧁🪐🥑🧜♀️🐣🎸🏖️ YODA BEST 💚🩷.”
In an interview earlier this year, the model got candid about her coparenting situation with Malik, following their split in 2021. “Zayn and I do our custody schedules months in advance,” she said. “That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t change here and there, but we help each other out and have each other’s backs.”
She added that they’ve entered a new chapter of their relationship that’s centered around “love, and a feeling of camaraderie.”
“And at the end of the day, we’re not interested in giving everyone our whole story,” Hadid noted. “What we are interested in is raising our daughter together, with so much respect for each other, and not just as co-parents, but what we’ve been through together.”
