The co-creator of Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino, explained why she didn’t want to meet Lauren Grahambefore ultimately casting her as Lorelai Gilmore.
In an October 2025 interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, alongside Graham, Kelly Bishop, who played Lorelai’s mother, Emily Gilmore, and Scott Patterson, who played Lorelai’s main love interest, Luke Danes, Sherman-Palladino shared details about casting the Gilmore Girls characters. She told the publication that she cast Bishop as Emily and Alexis Bledel as Lorelai’s daughter, Rory, before casting Lorelai.
“So I had Kelly and Alexis, and I couldn’t find her mother,” said Sherman-Palladino in the interview.
Sherman-Palladino then said the show’s casting director had mentioned Graham for the role. She said, however, that Graham was seemingly unavailable to star on Gilmore Girls as she had a prior commitment on a different series.
“Lauren [Graham] was initially on vacation and the casting director was talking about her, but she was on another show. I kept saying, ‘I don’t want to meet somebody I can’t have because if I fall in love with her and then I can’t have her, I will kill myself and you will all have committed murder,'” explained the writer during the October 2025 interview.
She said, however, that she eventually agreed to meet with Graham.
“So I fought it and fought it, and then we couldn’t find Lorelai, so finally I was like, ‘All right, fine. You win.’ She came back from vacation, walked in the door; she read three words, and I’m like, ‘Well, that’s it, we’re done,'” said Sherman-Palladino.
Lauren Graham Shared Why She Was Drawn to ‘Gilmore Girls’
During the Hollywood Reporter interview, Graham shared why she was drawn to Gilmore Girls, which had a seven-season run until 2007. She explained that she enjoyed the show’s merging of comedic and dramatic moments. Graham also complimented the script for being “so funny and different and warm and unique.” In addition, she said she “felt a real connection to the character.”
Graham reprised Lorelai in the 2016 four-episode Netflix revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. In an August 2025 interview on the Drew Barrymore Show, Graham said she is willing to come back as Lorelai.
“I always say yes because it’s my favorite character,” said Graham in the interview.
She said, however, she would prefer to film a Gilmore Girls holiday special, as opposed to a full series revival.
“You get to visit your characters and it’s the holiday. And it’s sentimental but it’s not like a whole reboot of the whole thing. So that is my idea that has been sanctioned by no one,” quipped Graham during the August 2025 interview.
